Spice farming in India
Spice
farming is extensively done in the whole
of India. Each spice is grown in an unique
manner. Each plant needs a different climate,
soil condition, irrigation, manure, pest
control methods etc.
Every spice
is grown in different parts of the country
depending upon the climate of the particular
place.Spices are grown with great care and
many spices also go through various post
agriciltural tratement as well.
Some common
spices like chillies,ginger,mustard, turmeric
etc are grown in various parts of the country.Karnataka
produces many spices like Cardamom (Small),
Chilly, Clove, Garlic, Ginger , Kokam ,
Nutmeg & Mace, Pepper, Turmeric, Vanilla.
Kerala also produces many spices like Cardamom
(Small), Cinnamon & Cassia, Clove, Ginger,
Nutmeg & Mace, Pepper, Turmeric,Vanilla.Chilli
grow best in warm and humid climate and
it requires dry weather during the maturation
of fruits.
The "Queen
of Spices", Cardamom, enjoys
a unique position in the international spices
market, as one of the most sought after
spices. India is known as the home of cardamom
from time immemorial. Cardamom is indigenous
to the evergreen forests of Western Ghats
in South India. India was the main producer
and exporter of this commodity till recently.
Large cardamom
grows well in forest loamy soils with gentle
to medium slopes. Water logged condition
is detrimental to the growth of the plants.
It performs well under shade.
Celery is a
Rabi season crop. It requires cool climate
during growth stage and warm dry climate
during maturity. It can be cultivated in
all most all types of soils but well drained
loamy soil suits it the best. Generally,
this crop is cultivated by transplanting
method. Nursery is raised during November
and seedlings are transplanted in the main
main field in early January. Flowering takes
place during March and seeds mature by end
of April.
Clove is a tropical
plant and requires warm humid climate. Generally
it is believed that clove requires proximity
to sea for the proper growth and yield,
experience in India has shown that the trees
do well in the hinterland conditions too.
Clove thrives in all situations ranging
from sea level upto an altitude of 1000
meters
